  Don’t expect your deposit back. It will be used for home improvement. We rented an old house from Brandy Pennington and upon moving in, the deficiencies were treated as “quirky” or part of living in a “charming” old house. However, upon moving out, we’re charged for
  A. The shower walls being made of wallpaper and that wallpaper, which was already in poor shape, being rotted. Well yes, wallpaper doesn’t belong in a shower. Of course, the money charged was used to put fresh linoleum in the shower so it wouldn’t rot again. Maybe it should have been linoleum from the get go? If not, replace it with wallpaper if that’s really the right way to do it. Then the next tenants can go ahead and wipe down the wallpaper every time they shower because that’s a thing people do to wallpaper in their showers.
  B. The driveway. We cleaned a few oil spots in the driveway after being charged for them. They were certainly no worse than when we moved in after 70 years of cars going through it. This wasn’t good enough because apparently for the first time since 1946 when these driveways were made, they needed to be sealed after the tenants moved out. If they were sealed before, they would have been more easy for to clean. However, the driveway was most likely never sealed in its 70 year existence and was cracked and warped appropriately decades before we got here.
  
  Bottom line: Rent from slumlords: expect to be treated like you are used to living in slums. We cooperated with no-notice contractors showing up regularly, leaking in the basement, sketchy electrical, all of it. I even took some broken-down antique shelving out of the basement for free upon moving in. Frivolous charges abound. Do not expect your deposit back.
